2019 | A Year In Review

Author: Marshall Schott

Happy holidays! It’s amazing to think 2019 is nearly over and that we’re moving into our 6th year of brewing nerdery. Whereas change came quick in the beginning, the overarching theme for Brülosophy in 2019 was maintenance, and the fact we were able to consistently publish two articles and a podcast episode every week was certainly validating. On top of that, despite the oft discussed current lull in homebrewing and craft beer, we’ve continued to see growth in terms of both readers of the site and listeners of the podcast, which is very motivating!

I can’t go into much detail at this point, but suffice to say we’re very excited for all 2020 has in store! For now, I’d like to review some of our most popular content from the last year.

| THE BEST OF 2019 |

The Brülosophy Podcast

xBmt Articles

Our exBEERiment, aka xBmt, series is what put Brülosophy on the map and continues to be our highest traffic web content. Here are the 5 xBmt articles that were viewed the most in 2019 including the original date of publishing.

  1. The Gelatin Effect | 1/5/15
  2. Impact Adding SMB At Packaging Has On Beer | 2/11/19

  3. El Dorado | 12/7/17
  4. Nelson Sauvin | 8/1/19

Short & Shoddy Articles

The purpose of our Short & Shoddy series is sort of twofold in that it’s where we focus specifically on certain styles while also seeing how they turn out when brewed using less than traditional methods.

  1. Vienna Lager | 1/24/19
  2. New England IPA | 7/25/19
  3. Märzen| 9/19/19
  4. California Common | 3/7/19
  5. International Pale Lager | 8/22/19

Brü It Yourself

Whereas the good majority of what we do is data based, we started the Brü It Yourself  series as a way to share interesting stuff we’re up to that doesn’t involve data collection. We think of it as our way of paying homage to some of our favorite brewing blogs.

  1. Sparkling Hard Berry Cider | 12/14/17
  2. Sparkling Skeeter Pee | 9/12/19
  3. India Pale Lager (IPL) | 3/14/19
  4. Berliner Weisse Mit Hafer | 1/17/19
  5. PilsDIPITY Double IPA | 7/11/19

Product Reviews

While not a main focus for us at Brülosophy, we occasionally review products we think kick ass and might be helpful to other brewers.

  1. Clawhammer Supply 120v eBrewing System | 8/15/19
  2. Ss Brewtech 1V eBrewing System | 12/20/18

Informational Articles

In between xBmts, The Hop Chronicles, Short & Shoddy, and Product Reviews, we occasionally publish other informational articles.

As far as static wepages go, there aren’t many, and these are the most viewed of the year.

  1. exBEERiments
  2. Quick Lager Method
  3. The Brülosopy Podcast
  4. The Hop Chronicles
  5. Harvesting Yeast From Starters

Recipe Pages

For as much hate it gets in certain online forums, my unconventional take on a classic Munich Helles was yet again viewed more than any other recipe on the site, for the 3rd year and counting.

  2. Munich Helles
  3. Tiny Bottom Pale Ale
  4. (m)Oktoberfest

  1. Congrats on a bunch of great articles again this year. Brulosophy has contributed a ton of practical info to a hobby and helps dispel a lot of anecdote-unspired anxieties among home brewers.

I’m sure every reader has had quibbles about something, but I think it’s safe to say everyone appreciates the effort in expanding the body of evidence — this is a great example of citizen science at work. Looking forward to what is up in 2020.
