Tips for Drinking at the Casino

A gambler drinking while gambling at a casino

There aren’t many things better than enjoying a cold one while sitting around a table with friends. Add some gambling into the mix, and you have the makings of a great night. Whether you’re in Vegas taking advantage of free drinks or playing from the comfort of your home on a casino app with a homebrew at hand, it’s important to be smart about your drinking. Beer and betting go hand in hand, but is there an optimal way to drink while gambling? From years of experience in this exact scenario, here are my do’s and don’ts for drinking at the casino.

Do’s

Stick to Beer

We’re focused on beer here, but many of us enjoy other drinks too. As much as I love whiskey, I avoid hard alcohol at all costs at the casino. Beer makes it much easier to pace yourself and stay within your limits. Whether you prefer a light beer like Coors Light to keep drinking throughout the night or a heavy IPA to slow things down, beer is the way to go—just be sure to mix in some water, too.

Get What You Like

You’re at the casino to have a good time, so order what you enjoy. It’s easy to feel pressure from the crowd at your table but don’t let anyone heckle you into getting something you don’t want. If a sweet cider sounds good, go for it! In the same way a homebrewer experiments with different styles—whether it’s a crisp lager or a bold stout—your drink choice should reflect what you truly enjoy. Most casinos offer a solid variety of options, so don’t be afraid to ask.

Take Advantage of Free Drinks

How many places offer free beer? Not all casinos do, but if you’re in one that does, make it count! Tip well upfront, and the service will come around quicker and more often. The longer you last at a table, the more free beer you can enjoy. If your goal is to drink and hang out with friends, consider betting smaller to make the most of the drink service.

Don’ts

Get Something Easy to Spill

Nobody wants to be the guy who spills their beer all over the blackjack table. While bottled beer might seem like the safest option, it’s easier to knock over since bottles are too narrow to fit snugly in the cup holder. With all the excitement, waving arms, and quick movements, a pint glass is your best bet to keep your drink in place.

Be Stingy on Prices

You don’t need to break the bank on drinks, but there’s no reason to settle for a beer you don’t want just to save a few bucks. Unlike gambling, the beer is guaranteed. It doesn’t make much sense to pinch pennies on a drink when you’re willing to bet that same amount in seconds at the table.

Go Overboard

Even if you’re sticking to beer, drinking too much often leads to gambling irresponsibly. Casinos serve drinks for a reason, it loosens decision-making. The same principle applies to brewing; precision and control lead to better results, whether you’re crafting a homebrew or strategizing at the poker table. Avoid chugging your beer, pace yourself, and keep an eye on your group. A fun casino night can go south quickly if someone overdoes it, just as rushing a fermentation process can impact a beer’s final quality.

Drink and gamble responsibly, much like how a skilled brewer carefully balances ingredients to create a well-crafted beer. Following these tips won’t guarantee a win, but they’ll help ensure you have a great time.

Cheers!
