Belma was discovered growing wild in Washington State, and it’s most notable aroma characteristic is strawberry. Yes, strawberry. We’re brewing a Pale Ale that uses nothing but a whole bunch of Belma hops and presenting it to tasters who are blind to the variety used, then asking them what characteristics they pick up? We’re also quizzing a member of The Brü Club. Is this strawberry thing legit? Let’s find out!

I’ve tried Belma a few times, but in my experience it is incredibly mild, with very little aroma and flavor at typical utilization rates compared to pretty much every other hop variety I’ve tried. Maybe I got them from a bad harvest year or something, but I’d never waste a batch of beer to try them out again.
