Hops For Hope | Brewing Up Cancer Awareness and Support

Yakima, WA, October, 2021 – Hop farmers, hop distributors, homebrewers, and craft breweries are all teaming up to raise funds for local cancer care and support services in the Yakima Valley. The One in Eight campaign is back for its fourth year and is a nationwide effort that was started by CLS Farms in Moxee, Wash. The campaign has grown and now includes partners Yakima Valley Hops in Yakima, Wash. and Gooding Farms in Wilder, Idaho, as well as brewing partners Cloudburst Brewing in Seattle, Wash. and Icicle Brewing in Leavenworth, Wash. “The hop and brewing communities are very passionate and giving, and the One in Eight campaign is just one way that we can help support the incredible work that Wellness House does here in town for those facing cancer,” said Jeff Perkins, Co-Founder of Yakima Valley Hops.

The One in Eight name references the number of women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but Wellness House in Yakima, Wash. provides support and resources for all cancer patients, survivors, and their families. “The One in Eight money was a much-needed financial infusion of operating money this past fall after 6+ months of nervously watching our bottom line. Thank you for caring for people in need, thank you for keeping our doors and phone lines open and thank you for bringing HOPE!” wrote Margaret S. Filkins, Executive Director Wellness House, in a thank you letter to those who supported the 2020 campaign.

Most of the funds are raised through the sales of an exclusive lot of selected hops, but One in Eight encourages brewers to support and donate to their local organizations as well. Homebrewers and craft breweries contribute to the campaign by brewing beers with the hops selected for One in Eight. Last year more than $4 for every pound of the hop variety Triumph sold was donated to Wellness House. “In a year that canceled or significantly reduced fundraisers (our major source of operating funds), One in Eight made it possible for Wellness House to continue providing services,” wrote Filkins.

This year the exclusive One in Eight lot of hops is special because it is the popular new hop variety Idaho Gem™, but with a twist since it was grown in Washington state for the first time. This exclusive lot of 2021 Idaho Gem™ was grown by the Wenas Hop Company in Wenas, Wash., which is a sub growing district of the Yakima Valley. Every pound of 2021 Idaho Gem™ sold on YakimaValleyHops.com means a donation by CLS Farms and Yakima Valley Hops to Wellness House. The fundraiser will go through the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
