It’s hard to believe that we’re already halfway through 2018. At the beginning of the year, we committed to producing weekly episodes of The Brülosophy Podcast while maintaining our twice weekly publication schedule, which left me feeling both anxious and insane. Thanks to the dedication of the Brülosophy crew and the support of our awesome sponsors, we’ve been able to keep this promise and we’ll soon be dropping the 50th episode. It took some time, but we’re catching our stride.
We also sponsored Homebrew Con 2018 for the first time by collaborating on a booth with industry friends. This was a very interesting experience, much different than past conferences where our primary responsibility was having fun and trying not to get hurt. This year, contributors Brian Hall, Malcolm Frazer, Jake Huolihan, Matt Del Fiacco, and I spent the majority of our time at our booth where we talked and served beer to attendees, collected data, and recorded content for the podcast. Jersey and Tim tagged along as well, dedicating a couple hours to reviewing brewer submitted beers live– if you enjoy their reviews, you’ll love episode 051. All in all, it was a great time!
2018 General Homebrewer Survey
We’ve committed to collecting data via annual surveys, the results of which are shared publicly with the hope that it’s used to bolster this great hobby. It’s our belief that knowledge of certain trends in homebrewing, from brewer demographics to brewing processes, will allow for more pointed focus on both strengths and weaknesses. We’d like to ask that everyone take a few minutes to follow the link below and complete the survey as honestly as possible. And please be sure to let all your brewing friends know about it too!
The survey will be open through August 2, 2018, after which the data will be analyzed and shared here on the site. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to help us learn more about modern homebrewers!

Upcoming Events
We’ve got a few things going on in the future and would love to have a beer with anyone who might be around when we are. Definitely do not hesitate to let us know if you’ll be attending any of the following events so we can be sure to meet up!
Elizabeth Celtic Homebrew Competition in Elizabeth, CO | July 22, 2018
Contributor Jake Huolihan will be collecting exBEERiment data at the 26th annual Elizabeth Celtic Festival on July 22, 2018. In addition to being Denver’s longest running Celtic Festival and Highland Games venue, the Parker Hopaholics Homebrew Club will be holding an AHA sanctioned homebrew competition as well.
Beer & Sweat in Cincinnati, OH | August 18, 2018
Contributor Malcolm Frazer is planning on attending the Bloatarian Brewing League’s Beer & Sweat event this year, a unique keg-only competition that is celebrating its 30th anniversary. With over 250 kegs of beer entered, Beer & Sweat promises to be one of the biggest homebrew parties one will ever experience!
CHAOS Summer BrewBQ in Chicago, IL | August 18, 2018
BBQ and beer– a perfect pairing! If you’re in or around the Chicago area on August 18, the 6th annual Summer BrewBQ put on by the CHAOS Homebrew Club is the place to be. On top of the all the great food and beer, contributor Matt Del Fiacco will be collecting data a couple fascinating exBEERiments.
Fresh Hop Ale Festival in Yakima, WA | September 29, 2018
From late August through early October, the typically quiet city of Yakima, WA becomes a popular destination for hop-head brewers and drinkers looking to dig their hands into the freshest hops on the planet. After my first hop harvest a couple years ago, I knew visiting the heart of hop country during harvest season would become an annual gig for me, it’s too cool to pass up. This year, contributor Brian Hall and I will be joining our friends from Yakima Valley Hops and Imperial Yeast at the 16th annual Fresh Hop Ale Festival, which has been rated as one of the top 10 beer festivals in the nation. Brian and I will be in town from August 28 through October 1 with plans to drink at Varietal Beer Company and other local breweries, record some podcast content with locals in the hop industry, and likely throw down some mad karaoke. Let us know via email or social media if you’ll be around!
Brew Your Own Boot Camp in Asheville, NC | March 22-23, 2019
It’s a ways off, but I wanted to let everyone know that I will be joining Experimental Brewing’s Denny Conn to give two all-day seminars on experimentation in brewing and beer at the Brew Your Own Boot Camp in Asheville, NC.
The beer scene in Asheville has exploded over the last few years, making it a rad location for this Boot Camp! I’m excited to collaborate with Denny and look forward to meeting a bunch of new people.
Thank you!

Took the survey. Wow some of those questions were weighted haha! All good fun though 🙂
Might have to add rainwater for next year, I just put home to water.
I think a lot of us Australians have water tanks I’m not sure if other countries do?
Keep up the good work cheers
Peter
Should read RO water.
Huh?
I was thinking of using rainwater, but I know a guy in NZ that has a rainwater collection system for drinking water who told me what it involves. It goes through a load of filters, ending in a UV filter to kill off any nasties from the bird crap that gets washed off the roof and into his tank. It’s pretty much RO for him. Not sure if that’s the case for you guys in Aus.
Thanks BrewStew we dont really have access to cheap RO water and most homes here have rainwater tank, I’m hoping the boil will kill of any nasties.
Just to answer your question Marshall, Huh? , on reflection It probably wasn’t worth bringing up.
Cheers anyway
Congrats on all the accomplishments so far this year. And to anyone on the fence, I used a pack of the last batch of Brulosophy Blend yeast on an amber ale, turned out great. I’ll be ordering again.
Wow, your family is going to let you hang out in Yakima for month?!
For a weekend.
Dude – consider revising your questionnaire. I was more than happy to fill it out until I see questions (without opt-outs) on salary, religion, race. I’m not at all clear what those have to do with homebrewing.
They may be interesting data points, but I’m not sharing that info, sorry.
Dude, it’s completely anonymous.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t answer some the questions because I have no experience with it when asking if doing such a step makes a better beer. To bad there wasn’t a “I don’t know answer” So I left those answers blank.
That’s fine. Thanks for completing what you could!
Are you guys gonna share the findings of the survey? Would be interesting to see what comes up
Always do! Expect to see the results in the next 6-8 weeks.
Are you guys gonna share the findings of the survey? Would be interesting to see what comes up
Definitely.
I’ll try the BB yeast next time around. Too many days near 100 lately here in southern New England to even think about mail order yeast. Even my LBHS received an entire shipment that had baked.
Should be interesting to see the consensus on this. Should give some good info on what type of person homebrews and how they go about it.
