It’s hard for me to grasp just how fast this year seems to be flying by, something I attribute both to the fact we’re having fun as well as how busy we’ve been keeping ourselves. Sticking to our commitment of publishing 2 articles and 1 podcast episode every week has taught me more about time management than I learned in my life prior to Brülosophy. I think I speak for all of the contributors when I say that this community makes it all worth it!
The purpose of this article is to fill readers in on some cool stuff we’ve got going on that perhaps some may have missed. As always, thank you so much for you support, it is very much appreciated.
Homebrew Con 2018 in Portland, OR
Brülosophy will be well represented at Homebrew Con this year in Portland, OR and we hope to see you there! This will be our first year sponsoring the event, meaning we’ll have a booth at the expo that we’re doing in collaboration with our friends from Yakima Valley Hops, Imperial Yeast, and Mecca Grade Estate Malt. The 4 of us will be serving beers that represent what each of us brings to the table, which means we’ll be collecting data on some very interesting variables throughout the conference. A huge cheers to Oregonian homebrewers Jeremy Jalabert, Jake Freshour, and Alex Brehm for taking on the task of brewing our beers for us!
In addition to collecting data, we’ve got a bunch of other stuff going on…
Brülosophy Karaoke Party @ Homebrew Con
Some may recall hearing about an event that went down at last year’s Homebrew Con in Minneapolis where upwards of 50 unpretentious party animals convened on a local karaoke bar for an incredibly memorable night of singing, sake bombs, and all around awesomeness. What started as a random idea to bring a little taste of what Jersey and I do so regularly at home to the conference ended up turning into an absolutely fabulous event.
I’m excited to announce that everything is in place for the 2nd annual Brülosophy Karaoke Party at an incredible spot just minutes away from the convention center! We’ve reserved a private suite at the hip Trio Club that has it’s own stage, space for cuttin’ a rug, a great sound system, and lighting to set the mood.
The party will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2018 from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am. In addition to the rad setting, we’ll have our very own karaoke DJ and a bartender who will be serving cans of an easy-drinking beer until we run out. Snacks will also be served throughout the night and attendees can purchase whatever else they want from the full bar and restaurant.
To keep things simple, we’re not selling tickets but rather asking guests to donate to help cover costs. Thing is, we’ve only got room for 110 people, and after opening up early reservations to our Patrons and HopBeat subscribers, that number is falling quickly. If you want to join us for a night of judgement-free craziness, use the contact form below to let me know and I’ll respond with details on how you can make your donation now to ensure your name makes it on the guest list.
Live Brü & A Session w/ Special Guests
Ready – Set – Ask! In addition to the Brülosophy crew fielding questions on the spot from conference attendees, representatives from Mecca Grade Estate Malt, Imperial Yeast, and Yakima Valley Hops will also be answering questions about each of their respective specialties. If you’ve been curious about growing your own hops, malting your own barley, or plating your own yeast, you do not want to miss this!
We’re currently planning the Brü & A session for late afternoon on Friday, June 29, though the specific time is TBD and will be announced once the schedule gets finalized.
Jersey & Tim Live Beer Reviews
We’ve currently got two 1-hour live sessions with Jersey and Tim planned, but in order for this to work, we need beer to review! If you’ll be attending Homebrew Con and want to have your beer evaluated by a couple of the best palates out there, let me know using the form below so we can get it all setup.
All entrants have to do is take a bottle or can of their beer/cider/mead/whatever, clearly labeled with their name and a brief description, to our booth no later than 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 28. Those who use the submission form above will have their beer reviewed first, after which we’ll fill any additional time with on-the-spot submissions. We’re considering having any brave brewers who are interested speak to their beer live on the show as well.
It’s A Sprint: Brewing Beer Faster Seminar
On Friday. June 29, 2018 at 2:00 PM, contributor Matt Del Fiacco and I will be joining our friend Chino Darji on a presentation focused on abbreviated brewing techniques including discussion about historical necessity, specific methods, personal experience, and exBEERiment results.
Fresh Hop Ale Festival in Yakima, WA
The 2018 hop harvest is upon us and I couldn’t be more excited about returning to the epicenter of it all, Yakima, WA, where I’ll be attending the 16th annual Fresh Hop Ale Festival!
Some may recall hearing us talk about a collaborative event we were planning with Yakima Valley Hops… well, we both found ourselves a tad busier than expected and thought it best to postpone it for this year.
New T-Shirts Available Now!
One of the main focuses during last year’s Yakima visit was working out the details for Yakima Valley Hops handling Brülosophy merch. It took some time, but I’m stoked to say the Brülosophy shop at YVH is now open and currently stocked with 3 fresh t-shirts, one of which is our new “Think Beer” design.
High quality prints on super soft fabric, these t-shirts are as comfortable and as they are good looking. We’re currently in talks about stocking other items and I’m curious what you all want to see in the store. Let us know in the comments section below!
Free Brülosophy Triangle Test Mat by GrogTag
I was approached a few months back by the folks from GrogTag, makers of the best looking beer labels out there, about collaborating on cool tasting mat idea.
I’m beyond impress with what they came up with as well as their idea to let people download the mat for free to print-off and use. Go checkout their blog to learn how to download your own triangle test mat!
Reap The Rewards Of Your Support
I want to give a shout-out to all of the amazing people who have helped us to continue doing what we do as often as we do it by choosing to support us. Since starting our Patreon early last year, we’ve gained almost 600 Patrons, all of whom are receiving some pretty dope rewards in return including access to unpublished contributor recipes, unique discounts at Yakima Valley Hops, all the way up to designing your very own xBmt from start to finish.
Back in January, we introduced a new $3 pledge level that qualifies Patrons to attend a monthly private Q & A livecast with a special guest. Patrons have already hung out with Michael Tonsmeire and John Palmer, both responding to questions for an hour! Here’s a video to give an idea of what these sessions are like.

Coming up next is Brewing Better Beer author and BJCP Grandmaster judge, Gordon Strong! For those who make their pledge now, all of the videos will remain on our secret Facebook page for future viewing.
Another benefit of being a Patron, regardless of pledge level, is that we let them know about stuff early and generally offer them first crack at getting new merch or signing up for events. Head over to our Patreon page now to check out all the rad rewards you can get for supporting Brülosophy!
The HopBeat
A quick plug for our newsletter that we started a couple months back. In addition to succinct re-caps of what we’ve been up to, subscribers also receive updates on stuff we might not mention on the site or show. Nothing crazy, just a couple emails per month.
Please do not hesitate to share any thoughts or comments in the section below!

I’m really digging the well thought out info and tips you guys are providing us! Thumbs up to Jersey and Tim….. looking forward to meeting you folks at Homebrew Con!
I can’t seem to find the hyperlink to the merch survey – can you point me in the right direction? I’d love to see a baseball cap with your science/atom design!
You need business grade merch. Button downs, polos. Etc… So I can wear them in the office.
