Dark ales get their signature color and roasty flavors from highly kilned grains, one of the more popular being roasted barley, which some believe imparts undesirable burnt flavors. Carafa I is an alternative that’s said to contribute a smoother, less acrid roast character. Brülosophy’s Will Lovell is here to put these two roasted grains to the test by having blind tasters compare Altbiers made with the same portion of either roasted barley or Carafa I.
