What’s Brewing At Brülosophy? | 2022 General Homebrewer Survey, Covid-19 Updates, & More!

Author: Marshall Schott

More often than I care to admit, I find myself stepping back from the daily grind to consider everything that has brought me to the point I’m at today, as cheesy as it sounds. It’s so easy to get lost in what’s right in front of me while losing sight of the bigger picture, and for me, taking that step back can be quite grounding. While I obviously know how long Brülosophy has been around, actually considering what all lies in that dash that sits between February of 2014 and today… whew… it’s a lot. Did I think back then that this weird idea of mine would become what it has? That we’d be publishing 2 articles and 2 podcast episodes per week? That we’d have the opportunity to travel to various locations to talk about this stuff we do? That we’d get the attention of people who say loathed our content that they’d publicly deride us?

That last one… well… yeah. I’ve never been one to shy away from controversy, and if I’m being honest, I don’t really mind having shit slung at me on occasion. But ultimately, all that other stuff matters quite a bit to me. Not to sound too dramatic, but there’s no denying my life is what it is today because of Brülosophy, which still feels so odd to say.

Anyway, I could wax lyrical forever, but I’ll spare you all. Suffice to say that I love this gig and recognize I couldn’t be here without all of the folks who choose to read and listen to the stuff we create. Thank you!

2022 General Homebrewer Survey

As you may have surmised, us Brülosophers love data, and that’s not isolated to just triangle test results. Having an understanding of what the modern homebrewer looks like, and how that changes over the years, not only allow satiates our curiosity, but gives us an idea of what we might be able to do to further improve and grow this awesome hobby. That’s the purpose of our annual General Homebrewer Survey, the results of which are never sold or used for any malicious purpose.

We understand that Brülosophy is not everybody’s cup of tea, and that’s perfectly fine, preference is subjective after all. However, with a goal of capturing the broadest set of data as possible, we’d like to ask that you share this survey with all of you brewing friends, whether they love us, hate us, or have never even heard of us. We don’t ask for any identifying information and the results will be made public once we’re done analyzing the data.

Note: our aim with this survey is to capture as much information about the modern homebrewer as possible with one hope being to shine a light on under-represented groups. As such, certain questions address topics that may be sensitive to some, please feel free to skip any that make you uncomfortable.

The survey will be open for approximately 6 weeks, after which the data will be analyzed and shared. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to help us learn more about modern homebrewers!

COVID-19 Updates

It is my sincere hope that this is the last update we give on Covid-19 ever, and for those who are already over it, I feel you. Thankfully, it looks like we’re largely in the clear, which has allowed us to ditch our Covid protocol and get back to collecting data from real human beings. Yes!

At this time, we’re fully aware that Covid has not just disappeared and will continue to follow whatever guidelines are laid out in our specific communities.

With that said, I’d like to invite those who live near Brülosophy contributors to keep an eye out for us at your local breweries, pubs, clubs, and beer events! We’re currently active the following cities:

The Brü Lab

If you enjoy listening to people talk about brewing science, then you’re going to love the newest podcast on the Brülosophy network, The Brü Lab, where host Cade Jobe takes you into the lab with real scientist to discuss research they’ve completed on our favorite beverage.

Since dropping the first episode back in February of this year, The Brü Lab has garnered a ton of professional and homebrewers, many who have reached out to share how stoked they are to have a podcast that’s both entertaining and educational. I’m obviously biased, but Cade has struck a satisfying balance of entertainment and education that I trust brewers of all experience levels will dig. Go subscribe now wherever you listen to podcasts!

Upcoming Events

Over the last few weeks, I’ve received a handful of emails from folks asking about our attendance at upcoming events. Seeing as we’re still crawling out of the pandemic, we don’t currently have set plans to attend anything. However, that may very well change, and if it does, we’ll do our best to announce it.

  1. Yes, thank you for all the thinking and work (and wort) that goes into this project of love. I also like that you want the survey to “shine a light on under-represented groups.” In my opinion you took a great step in moving the facial hair question to those who are male. It was either that or broaden the question to include all hair — TMI. As a woman, I feel quite welcome in the homebrew world, but little things remind me all the time that people assume that brewers are male. Looking forward to the next post.

  2. The “What do you use for brewing water” could use categories for natural springs and wells — I fetch my water from a nearby natural spring, because my local municipal water has really high chloramine levels.

  3. I really appreciate all everyone does for brulosophy, having gone from homebrewer to professional brewer 5 years ago, this resource has been extremely useful and I would not nearly as competent of either brewer if you all weren’t doing such awesome experiments. So thanks!
