What’s Brewing At Brülosophy? | 2021 General Homebrewer Survey, Covid-19 Updates, & More!

Author: Marshall Schott

As optimistic as I tend to be, there have been few causes to celebrate over the last 15 months, as we’ve all been impacted in one way or another by the Covid-19 pandemic. Thankfully, things seem to be moving in a positive direction, which for all of us means transitioning back to lives with some semblance of normalcy! In this article, I’ll be sharing how the reduction in restrictions will be impacting Brülosophy as well as a few other things. Most importantly, it’s time for the…

2021 General Homebrewer Survey

As a data nerd and people person, I was curious to what the modern homebrewer looks like and released a survey back in 2015 with the goal of satiating personal curiosity. When we shared the results, the response was much bigger than expected, so we decided to make it an annual tradition, which has consequently allowed us to track some fascinating changes over the years. Please, if you have an extra 10 minutes to spare, complete the survey!

Note: our aim with this survey is to capture as much information about the modern homebrewer as possible with one hope being to shine a light on under-represented groups. As such, certain questions address topics that may be sensitive to some, please feel free to skip any that make you uncomfortable.

The survey will be open through July 1, 2021, after which the data will be analyzed and shared. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to help us learn more about modern homebrewers!

COVID-19 Updates

I’m so freaking sick of hearing about Covid, particularly as it concerns us not being able to do what it is we all love. Well, thanks to everyone who masked up, stayed at home, and got vaccinated (or plan to when they can), we’re finally able to start collecting data again. Hell yeah!

Since we all live in different parts of the country, the transition back to our normal data collection process will be gradual, as only those contributors who are fully vaccinated will be attending social gatherings. Here in California, Andy Carter, Paul Amico, and I are all in that group, which means real (and far more meaningful) data from us.

Since the pandemic started, we’ve been employing a workaround approach that, while certainly better than nothing, we’re all frankly sick of. Needless to say, we’re thrilled to get back to homebrew club meetings, beer shares, and taprooms to serve our xBmt, The Hop Chronicles, and Short & Shoddy beers to others.

The Brü Lab

If you enjoy listening to people talk about brewing science, then you’re going to love the newest podcast on the Brülosophy network, The Brü Lab, where host Cade Jobe takes you into the lab with real scientist to discuss research they’ve completed on our favorite beverage.

Since dropping the first episode back in February of this year, The Brü Lab has garnered a ton of professional and homebrewers, many who have reached out to share how stoked they are to have a podcast that’s both entertaining and educational. I’m obviously biased, but Cade has struck a satisfying balance of entertainment and education that I trust brewers of all experience levels will dig. Go subscribe now wherever you listen to podcasts!

Upcoming Events

Over the last few weeks, I’ve received a handful of emails from folks asking about our attendance at upcoming events. Seeing as we’re still crawling out of the pandemic, we don’t currently have set plans to attend anything. However, that may very well change, and if it does, we’ll do our best to announce it.

Supporting Brülosophy

I can’t overstate how appreciative all of us are of those who read our articles and listen to our podcasts, Brülosophy simply wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you. If you’d like get a little something extra for you support, please consider becoming a Patron of Brülosophy where you’ll receive cool rewards for making a small monthly pledge—for example, this month, Patrons who pledge at the $5 tier got 20% of all fresh 2020 French hops. Pretty cool for helping us to continue doing what we do.

We sincerely hope everyone out there is staying safe, brewing a ton, and finally enjoying the prospect being able to toss a few back with friends. Please don’t hesitate to share any thoughts or suggestions in the comments section below!

  1. The phrase, “I don’t know” was the first thing that came to mind frequently on the later questions. I left those blank.

Maybe the next survey could include “I don’t know” as an option. Some of us are reluctant to give a poorly informed opinion. Then again, you may be interested in all opinions, marginally informed or otherwise, and thus should do what ever you think is best.

    Thanks for all you do.

Looking forward to this year’s survey results. Survey was interesting enough that I went back to review results of prior year surveys. Also, if you are considering changes to future surveys, suggest adding “don’t know” or “no opinion” to questions about importance of various brewing practices.

  3. The question about which style we brew should allow for multiple options. And I agree with Iburns about the “I don’t know” option.
    Keep up the good work!
