Product Review | ThermoWorks TimeStick Trio

Author: Marshall Schott

As any homebrewer knows, timing is key– mash rest, boil length, hop additions. Brew days can get a little hectic when it comes to organizing all of this, hence the importance of using a good timer. I personally keep 3 separate timers in my home brewery, 4 if you include the timer on my smartphone, all of which I strategically set to run for different lengths at the same time. It works, but it’s not the easiest dance getting them all setup.

Enter the new ThermoWorks TimeStick Trio, a super easy to use multi-timer with a slim profile so it fits nicely in your pocket. The kind folks at ThermoWorks sent me one of these things earlier this week to review and I’ve been playing with it since. It’s a rad piece of gear that will make any brew day just a touch more convenient, reducing 3 separate timers into a single pocket-sized stick.

As with the famous ThermaPen thermometer, the TimeStick Trio is designed for convenience and feels very sturdy, like it can handle the bumps and bruises of a typical brew session.

The left side of the unit has 3 set buttons that control each timer, pretty simple– press the set button, set the timer using the numbered buttons on the front, then click the Start/Stop button to engage the timer.

The TimeStick Trio has a small but strong magnet on the back, making for very easy storage when not in use.

Overall, it’s a cool timer, one I’ll be putting to use every brew day henceforth. Is it necessary? Of course not, but it is convenient and of obviously higher quality than other timers I’ve used, and for that it’s certainly worthy of consideration.

If you have any questions about the TimeStick Trio, please don’t hesitate to ask, I’ve been using it for different applications over the last week and have gotten to know it fairly well. Cheers!

  1. Can you explain how you use three (four!?) timers at the same time? I’ve never used more than just the one on my watch (I do take “splits” to break out things mash time, boil time, chill time, etc..) and can’t picture how an additional timer would be used.

    1. That is a good question. I see two options in which multiple timers would be usefull, decoction brewing and if you do multiple batches in paralell.

    2. Valid question, indeed. Truth is, if what you’re using works, then there’s really no need to change. I’m the type who likes to have separate timers for each hop addition so I don’t have to remember what to set a single timer to, hence multiple timers, or a single multi-timer, comes in real handy. Also, the majority of my brew days I’m making 2 batches simultaneously, which makes remember to reset a single timer incredibly more difficult. An example: let’s say I’m making a Vienna that has 3 hop additions next to a Pale Ale that has 4 additions. Each batch gets it’s own timer for the mash, then to make things more convenient, I’ll use multiple timers for time the boil and each hop addition; when I hear a beep, I know it’s time to add hops and I don’t have to worry about resetting a timer accurately. It’s really convenience, not necessity.

      1. I use an app called toms multitimer on my android phone. It lets me set as many timers as I want (which usually ends up being about 8).

I set timers for absolutely everything, including reminding myself when to start heating up sparge water and a few other random things like that.

  2. I simply use the mobile version of BeerSmith. It has my entire hop schedule coded in, and tells me when to add what (including whirfloc tabs). MUCH easier than even a 3-timer timer!

    1. I’ve tried using the BeerSmith timer many times before, I still prefer my actual timers! Haha. This is obviously a “whatever floats your boat” type of deal, I totally appreciate that we all differ in our opinions. Cheers!

    2. I use beersmith mobile also for all of my brewing numbers and timers. While not perfect, it’s definitely useful.

  3. The $30ish timestick trio isn’t essential but it sure is handy (one handed operation) and it keeps one hand free and your $600 phone safe, dry and unbroken from constantly checking it by taking it out of your pocket and saves dropping it on the ground , screen breaks then you wish you had a timestick trio and not using your newly busted phone with the timer apps.

  4. How has this held up over the years? I’m thinking of getting one and would love a long-term update!

I still use it when making 2 batches at once, it works fine. That said, I really like this multi-timer (https://amzn.to/2yyqXpL) as well because it has 4 timers and a little place to write what stuff down like hop additions and such.
