Experimental Homebrewing: Mad Science in the Pursuit of Great Beer | Book Review

I like to brew and I like to experiment. The melding of these 2 interests was the impetus for starting this website, it gave me a place to share my dorky ideas and exBEERiment results. Imagine my excitement when I heard that a book was being written about exactly these interests!

Written by two of the coolest dudes in homebrewing, Drew Beechum and Denny Conn, this book is very informative without getting too scientific, funny without getting too annoyingly silly, and playful without being too flippant. Chock-full of interesting recipes and experiment ideas, Experimental Homebrewing opened my eyes to a plethora of future exBEERiment options and definitely inspired me to continue down the path of experimentation. One of the aspects I appreciate most about this book is the perspective that we’re not trying to find a cure for cancer, we’re just playing around with brewing processes and ingredients with the intent to potentially reveal something new and, even more, HAVE FUN! It’s likely that if a few homebrewers experience a certain result, you will experience it as well, and I agree with the authors that this is good enough. Homebrewing experiments don’t require precisely controlled variables or white lab coats, just a desire to play around with what you’ve got to see what you get. While advanced brewers may find this book a bit more approachable, Drew and Denny hit the gates by talking about simple equipment builds and brewing methods, which I believe is presented in such a manner that even new folks to the hobby can understand.

What I appreciate most about this Experimental Homebrewing is that it encourages homebrewers to do more than just make beer, it promotes the growth of the hobby by advocating for experimentation, which ultimately leads to greater knowledge about this thing we all love so much! Not only did these guys write a great book, which is beautifully illustrated, but they started their own website as well, ExperimentalBrew.com, where homebrewers can post the findings of their experiments and bounce ideas off of other experimenters, among many other things.

I truly believe this book fully deserves to make the list of must-reads for homebrewers, it’s that good. It is expected to hit the shelves within the next week or so (earlier than originally planned) and you can pre-order it now! Whether you purchase the book or not, head over to the ExperimentalBrew website and peruse the growing database of fun content.

Cheers!
