BeerSmith Tutorial: BIAB Mash Profile Setup

Author: Marshall Schott

In this second video, the focus it on setting up a mash profile for Brew In A Bag (BIAB) brewing. Hopefully this is enough information to get you hitting your numbers and making great beer! If not, shoot me an email and we can troubleshoot together.

If you’re not currently using BeerSmith, you can use it free for 21 days by downloading it directly from the website (I get no compensation for this), after which you can purchase a registration code. You can also purchase the software on CD from Amazon, which helps to support Brulosophy. Either way, it is a great product for homebrewers!

Corrections & Clarification
– At 3:53 I say “batch sparge is a full volume mash,” I meant BIAB… woops.
– This tutorial is for those who do a full volume mash in their boil kettle; if you split your brewing liquor (meaning you have a “sparge” step) or if you mash in a different vessel (like a cooler), these settings will not work for you.

Next up for the tutorial videos will be setting up mash profiles for Batch Sparge brewing, I hope to have it ready within the next day or so. Cheers!

  1. Just out of curiosity, how are these profiles different than the BIAB profiles preloaded on Beersmith? Obviously you’ve created a more granular set of profiles (6 vs 3) but are there any other real differences?

Just got beersmith today in preparation of my first all grain batch soon and saw this video previously. Thanks for all the wonderful content you produce

    1. To be honest, I’ve never seen the default BIAB profiles, they weren’t a part of the program when I started beta testing in 2011. My guess is they could still use some “personalization,” but ultimately they’ll work fine. Cheers!

  2. Hey brulosopher! I recently got beersmith 2 and i’ve watched your equipment setup and biab tutorials, but i’m having some troubles scaling recipes in beersmith.. I’m trying to scale from 5 gallons to 1 gallon.
    Here is what i’ve done:
I made a copy one of Brad’s sample recipes (Burton Ale), and renamed it with my own name. Then I clicked Scale in the top ribbon thing. Then i clicked on my equipment profile, which automatically filled in my information. I checked the checkbox that says “Match original gravity, color, and bitterness”) and clicked OK.
The color and bitterness stayed the same as Brads, the the gravity dropped by .015… And, the ingredients amounts looked strange as well.. The 5g recipe used 1lb brown sugar and 1lb crystal 20L. I would assume that the scaled recipe would be 1/5th lb (3.2 oz) brown sugar and 1/5th lb (3.2 oz) crystal 20L, but it was actually 2.4oz and 2oz respectively… Do you have any idea what i could be doing wrong?

    Thanks!

    1. Scaling recipes can be a little weird, especially down to 1 gallon. I’d recommend just rounding to the nearest full oz, or even whatever you think works best based on the predicted stats. I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong, actually, the scaling equation includes many factors. Feel free to email me if you want to hash this out a little further- [email protected]

  3. I just finished reading your article “THE BREW BAG’S MLT FABRIC FILTER | PRODUCT REVIEW.” Great information, thank you! I plan to use a Brew Bag in my 5 gallon Igloo cooler as a mash tun, for making smaller, 2.5 gallon BIAB batches.

After watching your video on “BEERSMITH TUTORIAL: BIAB MASH PROFILE SETUP,” you stated on the article page…

…if you mash in a different vessel (like a cooler), these settings will not work for you.

Could you provide any insight into the correct Beersmith mash profile settings when using a cooler for the MT in a full volume BIAB?

      1. Kevin Brumfield

Awesome! In the sparge mash profiles I set up, should I uncheck the Batch Sparge Options and then check the BIAB Mash and Full Boil Mash option?

  4. Robert Lavigne

I’m just looking for a little clarification. You mention at 3:30 in the video that you always do a 1 hour mash but you left the step time in the profile at 90 minutes. Shouldn’t this be changed to 60 minutes? Or are you leaving it at 90 for a specific reason?

Also I notice the “Water to add” field is at 5.00 gallons. My profile default is 3.75 gallons. Given that I’m doing 5G batches should I be updating this field to 5 as well?

    Thanks for your help!

    1. Marshall Schott

I just forgot to change the time in the mash profile, set it to whatever, it won’t change anything down the line.

The “water to add” section isn’t necessarily dependent on your batch size, I’m pretty sure you can leave it at 3.75 gal and be fine as long as you set the proper batch size. I’ll have to look into it to know for sure.
