It wasn’t long after starting Brülosophy that I started receiving suggestions to turn it into a podcast. As someone who has been recording music at home for nearly 15 years, I was certainly interested, though resisted for various reasons, namely the time commitment and subsequent “cost” given my admitted perfectionist tendencies. With pressure mounting both externally from readers and internally from the other contributors, I finally decided to bite the bullet and give it a go…

  1. That´s amazing! There is no such thing as too many podcasts about homebrewing, already subscribed and eager to listen.

  2. Just a heads up, I think some people may be having a tough time finding it because of the ü. The app I use (downcast) couldn’t find it through a search until I put that in, which is a pain on the phone.

  3. Nothing comes up for me on my phone when I click on the Google play podcasts link. Google play music opens but it doesn’t go to it. I searched brulosophy but nothing came up either.

    1. I updated the search terms in the RSS feed, but I think it’s going to take time for the different channels to see that. Until then, you have to search for “brülosophy” with the umlaut.

      That said, when I click the Play link, it directs me to the right place. Hmm.

      1. It sadly appears that Google Play Music podcasts feature is only available in the US and Canada at the moment. It’s a shame for those of us in the UK who also like beer!

      2. Try a third part app! You may still need to use the umlaut ü in brülosophy when searching, trying to get that fixed asap 🙂

      Well, at least until I get that C & D letter. I tried contact Barsuk about it and got no reply, figured I’d go the sneaky route and change when needed. Fingers crossed.

  4. I listened to the podcast yesterday during my run. What an awesome job! Best podcast I listened to in quite a while. Malcolm Frazer was fantastic. He did his homework and it showed. Only improvement I can suggest would be to explain the difference between hot and cold trub (break); it was mentioned once, that I can recall, and with not much explanation. I commented in many experiments that the literature review sections were lacking; well, the literature review in this podcast was excellent. Looking forward to the next ones.
    Given what was mentioned in the podcast, I wish to repeat a comment I made on other exbeeriments on experimental design. You must always choose the beer style that gives you the best chance to find a significant difference; once you did, then validate other styles. The reason is that failing to find a significant difference in an experiment is not the same as validating that the two treatments are similar. Failing to find a significant difference can happen because treatments are similar, but can also happen because of many other factors that you did/could not measure/ control. As you mentioned you may do a third iteration, I humbly suggest weissbier as the best model to re-test this hypothesis. Congratulations again !

      We only had so much time to speak about the many facets of the wonderful world of trub. Some part were dropped. Some purposefully others got lost in shuffle and among the excitement of the first episode. I actually meant to touch upon the differentiation between hot vs cold break – oops!

      I believe Brewing Techniques (which I believe is now affiliated with Morebeer) has a trub write up from either 1993 or 1998 (cannot recall) and the author covers both. Kunze, Technology Brewing and Malting, also covers both. That is an expensive text book but someone you know may have it or access to it.

      We will continue to experiment with these variables and with different styles.

        I too bought it through the VLB, vs say Siebel. It was close to $75-100 less from the VLB. I had a loaner copy for about a year-and-a-half and I finally had to return. Which meant I had to buy one. Borrowing was cheaper!

Hey guys, I enjoyed this last podcast (short and shoddy) so much that when it finished I was like “wth… was this podcast 30 mins long or what?!” Then I realized I had been sitting for an hour drinking beer hearing it hah, great podcast, keep up the good work! I recently brewed an ice azacca IPA (by mistake… Left the beer when cold crashing way too long in my chest freezer). It would be cool if you guys did an experiment with that type of technique, freezing some of the water when cold crashing and keg it to give it an abv boost.
