ANNOUNCMENT: 2026 General Homebrewer Survey

Author: Marshall Schott

Brülosophy officially launched in February 2014, and over the last 12 years, the homebrewing landscape has changed quite a bit. Electric brewing appears to have ousted propane as the main energy source for brewing, more people are comfortable making lagers, and the American Homebrewers Association is no longer part of the Brewer’s Association, just to name a few things. I’ve been asked a similar question by a number of people recently:

Why does it matter that homebrewing isn’t doing as good today as it was a few years ago?

As far as I can tell, the general sentiment is by those who have asked this has to do with the fact that interest in hobbies tends to ebb and flow, and regardless of how popular homebrewing is, we’ll likely always have access to the ingredients and gear we need to make beer. Maybe that’s true (maybe), but as I’ve said many times over the years, the main reason I’ve stuck with this hobby for so long is the community, a community that has dramatically shrunk over the last several years. And that matters to me.

I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I wholly believe in the power of data, which I understand has been used for some shitty things in this day and age, but that’s far from our intention with the General Homebrewer Survey. Rather, the information gleaned from this survey paints a picture of who the modern homebrewer is while giving us an idea of how homebrewing has changed overtime, and our hope is that this helps direct efforts for keeping homebrewing alive.

Just to be sure – we do not sell this data! The results you’ll see here in a few months is exactly what everyone else sees, and every submission is completely anonymous.

2026 General Homebrewer Survey

We understand not every homebrewer is a fan, or even aware, of Brülosophy, and while this survey is most likely to be completed by those who are, in order to capture a broader perspectives, we’d like to ask all of our readers to please share this survey with your homebrewing friends, clubs, and social media groups.

Note: our aim with this survey is to capture as much information about the modern homebrewer as possible with one hope being to shine a light on under-represented groups. As such, certain questions address topics that may be sensitive to some, please feel free to skip any that make you uncomfortable.

The survey will be open for approximately 6 weeks, after which the data will be analyzed and shared. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to help us learn more about modern homebrewers!

  1. Think allot of people started homebrewing during covid. Some stuck with it, allot decided that making beer was not a way to save money, lol

  2. “and our hope is that this helps direct efforts for keeping homebrewing alive”. Any ideas on how to actually do this: use the survey results to keep the activity alive?
